George Martin: The things we love destroy us every time

A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one.

A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge.

Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armour yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.

Some old wounds never truly heal, and bleed again at the slightest word.

If you would take a man’s life, you owe it to him to look into his eyes and hear his final words. And if you cannot bear to do that, then perhaps the man does not deserve to die.

Love is a weakness, love no one but your children.

Power resides only where men believe it resides. It’s a trick, a shadow on the wall. And a very small man can cast a very large shadow.

Hate’s as good a thing as any to keep a person going.

Chaos is a ladder. Only the ladder is real and climb is all there is.

What do we have left once we abandon the lie?
